So Much Silence

Old Trolley Cars
Abandoned,
their tracks now only frost heaves on a four lane,
seven bleached shells
far from their midwestern home.

Words fall to the side,
lips a thin line unwilling to part,
to say what is behind them.
searching beyond the bracken
further
I returned with nothing.
A growing silence,
the air resigned to the passing car engines.
